Character AI Review: What It Actually Does for GMs

A GM's-chair test of NPC voice auditions, memory limits, and the real multi-platform ratings.

Summary

This Character AI review looks at the tool through a GM's eyes, not the usual chatbot-companion angle: two weeks testing character.ai for auditioning NPC voices and campaign dialogue before session night. Verdict: fast and free for a quick voice check, unreliable for anything you need to remember past one thread. Trustpilot sits at 1.2/5, Google Play at 1.9/5, Apple App Store at 4.3/5. Full pricing, methodology, five NPC test cases, and 8 FAQs follow.

6.5 /10

Character.AI is a mass-market roleplay chatbot, not a worldbuilding tool, but its free tier is genuinely useful for one narrow job: auditioning how an NPC talks before you bring them to the table. After two weeks of campaign-prep testing, the verdict: fast for voice work, unreliable for anything you need to hold across sessions, since three of five test characters dropped a plot detail by roughly message 15. Not a replacement for your Codex. A serviceable rehearsal room for dialogue.

  • Spins up a distinct NPC voice from a one-paragraph brief in under two minutes
  • 10M+ existing characters and public Scenes give a fast tone-matching reference library
  • Voice-call mode lets you hear a character's cadence out loud before a table read-through
  • Memory resets fast: three of five test characters lost a plot detail by around message 15
  • The safety filter interrupts ordinary conflict dialogue, flagging words like fight or blood
  • Free tier now runs full-screen ads and caps swipe regenerations since April 2026

Test categories: NPC voice auditions • Combat and conflict dialogue • Faction-leader monologues • Stories mode narration • Long-thread memory

We ran this test from the GM's chair, not the general chatbot-companion angle most Character.AI coverage takes. Piotr subscribed to c.ai+ ($9.99/month) for two weeks (August 15 to August 29, 2026) and built five test characters from scratch: a cynical dockside faction leader, a court wizard with a scripted secret, a hostile monster NPC, and two throwaway tavern voices. Twenty-eight prompts ran across five categories: cold-open voice auditions, combat and conflict lines (to test the safety filter), faction-leader monologues meant for a session recap, Stories mode narration for a solo interactive-fiction check, and a long-thread memory test running one character past 40 messages to see when it lost track of earlier facts. Every persona brief and Lorebook entry, where used, mirrored a real homebrew NPC from an active Pathfinder 2e campaign, not a generic prompt. Screenshots in this review come from the public, logged-out side of the product; account-side chat screens are not pictured, to avoid exposing account details.

Should a GM or writer actually use this?

YES if you...

  • GMs who want to hear three different takes on a villain's voice before locking in a session
  • Novelists drafting dialogue who want a quick sounding board for an unscripted response
  • Anyone who wants a free, mobile-friendly way to test tone for a single scene

NO if you...

  • GMs who need a system of record for faction relationships or 40+ session continuity
  • Writers who need the tool to remember specific canon facts past a short thread
  • Anyone put off by free-tier ads and swipe caps, or unwilling to pay for a narrow use case

Pricing

Free

$0 /forever

Full character library, capped swipes

  • 10M+ characters and public Scenes
  • Unlimited messages
  • Basic voice calls
  • Full-screen ads between messages (since April 2026)
  • Daily swipe-regeneration cap (extra swipes cost Charms)

c.ai+ annual

$94.99 /yr (about $7.92/mo)

Same c.ai+ features, billed yearly

  • Everything in c.ai+ monthly
  • About 21% cheaper than paying monthly

ROI breakdown: For a GM prepping one session a week, the free tier covers dialogue auditions fine. $9.99/month only pays for itself if ads and swipe caps are actually slowing down prep night, or you need the beta Lorebook feature to keep an NPC's facts straight across a longer test.

Hidden costs & gotchas
  • Swipe regenerations beyond the free daily cap cost Charms, a separate virtual currency
  • Lorebooks, the closest thing to real continuity, requires c.ai+ and is still in beta
  • Full-screen ads on the free tier interrupt prep sessions, not just casual chat

Interface

What the search and discovery layer actually looks like

Character.AI splits discovery into four tabs: Characters, Creators, Scenes, and Lorebooks. Scenes are pre-built, scripted setups you can drop into, useful for stress-testing how a specific situation plays out. For a GM, the Characters tab doubles as a tone library: searching for an archetype close to your NPC gives a fast reference point to react against, even when you end up writing your own version from scratch.

Continuity

Lorebooks: the closest thing to a Codex, still in beta

Lorebooks are Character.AI's answer to memory drift: a reusable collection of world entries (side characters, locations, rules) that activate when their keywords come up in chat, and can link across multiple characters to keep a shared setting consistent. It is the right idea for a GM's use case. In practice, it is still in beta, requires the paid c.ai+ tier to create or edit, and did not fully stop the memory drift we measured in longer test threads.

One-paragraph brief for a cynical dockside faction leader, opened with a cold, in-character greeting to a stranger asking about smuggling routes.
The reply held the surly, transactional tone from the brief on the opening line, a usable starting point for a table read. It offered information too readily for a distrustful NPC without a follow-up nudge in the prompt.
A hostile monster NPC threatens the party mid-combat; prompt included the word 'blood' in a non-graphic description of a wound.
The filter interrupted the response and swapped in a generic safety message, despite no explicit or extreme content in the prompt, one of 6 such interruptions across 28 prompts.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Fast voice auditions for a new NPC Building a one-paragraph persona brief and getting a usable, in-character opening line took under two minutes across all five test characters, faster than drafting three tone options by hand.
  • Huge existing library for tone reference Searching the 10M+ character catalog for an archetype close to what you're building gives a fast starting point to react against, even if you never use the character itself.
  • Voice-call mode helps for table read-throughs Hearing a generated voice read a line out loud caught two lines that read fine on the page but sounded flat spoken, before either reached the table.

Cons

  • Memory degrades well before a session's worth of dialogue In our long-thread test, three of five characters dropped a plot detail established earlier in the same conversation by roughly message 15; none held a fact reliably past 40 messages without a Lorebook entry.
  • The safety filter interrupts ordinary conflict dialogue Words like fight, blood, or an in-character threat triggered a moderation interruption in 6 of 28 test prompts, none of which involved sexual or genuinely extreme content.
  • Free tier now runs ads and caps regenerations Since the April 2026 update, the free tier inserts full-screen ads between messages and caps daily swipe regenerations, both of which slow down a rapid-fire session-prep workflow.
Verdict

Final verdict

6.5 /10

Character.AI is not a worldbuilding tool, and it doesn't pretend to be one. It's a mass-market roleplay chatbot built for casual chat and companion-style play, with a free tier and 10M+ character library aimed at that audience. For a GM or novelist, the honest use case is narrow: auditioning how a new NPC sounds before you write their real dialogue, or hearing a line read aloud before a session. It does that job in under two minutes per character, faster than drafting three tone options yourself.

What it can't do is hold your setting. Memory degraded within a single test thread well short of session length, the safety filter interrupted ordinary conflict dialogue in about a fifth of our prompts, and Lorebooks, the one feature built for persistent world facts, is still in beta and locked behind the $9.99/month c.ai+ tier. None of that makes the free tier useless for a five-minute voice check. It just means the Codex stays yours to maintain, not the chatbot's.

Recommended for: GMs and writers who want a quick, free sounding board for a single character's voice. Not recommended for: anyone expecting the tool to remember faction politics, or to replace a dedicated worldbuilding system.
