Summary

This town name generator builds five fantasy town names at a time, each paired with a one-line local rumor you can drop straight into your next session. Pick what the town lives on, grain and mill, river ford, mining camp, frontier garrison, logging camp, or hill pasture, and set its current mood, thriving, humble, declining, haunted, or boomtown. The livelihood shapes the sound of the name; the mood decides how elaborate it gets and which rumor it ships with. Everything runs in your browser, free, with no signup.

How this works

What shapes each town name

Livelihood sets the sound

Each of the six livelihoods, mill, ford, mine, garrison, timber, and pasture, draws from its own prefixes, roots, and suffixes, so a mining camp and a fishing ford never sound alike. That separation matters when you are improvising three settlements in one session and need them to feel like they belong to different corners of the same realm.

Mood shapes the name

Thriving and boomtown settlements get longer, three-part names, and a boomtown adds New. Declining towns earn an Old, haunted towns a Grey, humble towns stay plain. The fortune of the place shows up in the name before you say a single word of description.

Every name ships with a rumor

Each result pairs a name with a one-line rumor drawn from a pool matched to the mood you picked, ready to drop on your players the moment they walk in. It is a hook, not a full history, so you still decide what turns out to be true.

Using it at the table

From blank map to named town in three picks

  1. 1

    Set the livelihood

Choose what keeps the town fed: grain, river trade, ore, a garrison, timber, or hill pasture. This is the one choice that shapes how every name actually sounds.

  2. 2

    Set the mood

Thriving, humble, declining, haunted, or boomtown. This decides both the rumor pool and how elaborate the name gets, so a haunted mining camp reads nothing like a boomtown one.

  3. 3

    Generate and use it

Click generate for five names and rumors. Keep the one that fits the scene, or click again for a fresh batch. There is no limit, so naming three towns in one session costs nothing but a few clicks.

Common questions

Is this town name generator free to use?
Yes. No signup, no account, no cap on how many batches you generate. The Koroverse Codex keeps this tool open because a name generator that gates you behind a login isn't worth building.
Does this use AI to write the names?
No. Every name comes from word banks and a fixed set of rules that run in your browser, not a language model. That means instant results, no server round trip, and the same table-ready output every time you click generate, useful when your players are staring at you waiting for an answer.
How is this different from the City Name Generator?
The city tool sorts names by cultural tradition and settlement size. This one sorts by what the town actually lives on, mill, ford, mine, garrison, timber, or pasture, and by its current mood, a smaller and humbler naming logic suited to a town rather than a capital.
Can I use the generated names in my campaign or manuscript?
Yes. Nothing here is licensed or trademarked. Drop any name straight into your Codex, no attribution needed.
Does the tool save or store anything I generate?
No. Names are generated client-side and disappear on refresh. Nothing is sent to a server except an anonymous tool-run beacon we use for our own usage stats.
Why do some names start with New, Old, or Grey?
That's the mood talking. Boomtown adds New, declining adds Old, haunted adds Grey. Thriving and humble towns keep a plain name, no epithet.
Can I get a different batch without changing the settings?
Yes. Hit generate 5 town names again. The word banks are large enough that repeats within a batch are rare, even on the same livelihood and mood, so you can keep clicking mid-session without breaking the pace.

Need a bigger settlement?

The City Name Generator covers your capitals. This one covers the villages your players actually visit most, the ones that never get a proper write-up until they suddenly matter.
